The Late Summer Edit

Late August is like the summer’s sunset.  The days are warm, but there’s a slight chill in the morning air.  It gets dark earlier, and I need a cardigan for morning coffee runs en route to work.  As a teacher, this is my busy season.  I’ve tried to stop along the way to smell the sunflowers.

  1. The bag.  Lands’ End Medium Print Open Top Canvas Tote Bag.  That’s a mouthful! This is a nice size, a little smaller than I usually carry for work.  It will fit my lesson plan book, papers and laptop.  It’s a classic style and I like the houndstooth design.  I really like the name – Prince of Wales plaid.  There’s usually a discount code and it can be monogrammed too!  #nevermetatoteIdidntlike  #mightbuyitforthename

  1. The school supplies.  Target Threshold Mouse Pad.  I grabbed this as soon as I saw it.  If it’s blue and white, it’s usually in my cart.  It comes in other colors as well.  It isn’t made of neoprene or rubber; there’s more of a padded cardboard feel to it.  The patterns and the price make it hard to resist.  #dressupthehomeoffice

  1. The drink.  Recess.  As a teacher, any drink with that name gets my vote!  I first saw this in Sag Harbor and was curious about it.  I purchased a few cans (without my reading glasses).  When I got them home, I realized they had CBD.  I don’t know much about CBD but the cans sure are cute!  Maybe they will help with back-to-school stress?  #suckerforpackaging

  1.  The Book PickClose to ShoreThe Terrifying Shark Attacks of 1916.

I first read this years ago.  It has stayed with me, and by that I mean in my occasional nightmares.  The book recounts the rogue Great White that terrorized the Jersey Shore that summer.  I grew up visiting the Jersey Shore on family vacations.  Fortunately, we weren’t visiting that summer.

Riveting read.  #stayoutofthewater

  1. The Polish.  Icelanded a Bottle of OPI.  It’s a fun departure from the sunny summer hues.  I like to wear more subdued polish in late summer.  Neutral nails, in my opinion, look sophisticated.  I’m not sophisticated, but I don’t stop trying.  This color is kind of a greyish lavender that is neutral but not boring.  There’s still plenty of sandal season left!  #short49shadesofgrey

  1. The Movie.  Dead Poets Society.  Some teachers make this their night-before-the-first-day ritual.  Robert Sean Leonard’s character, Neil, haunted me long after the movie was over.  And the scene with the desks gets me every time.  #seizetheday

That’s it for my late summer roundup.  Hey, go ahead and buy yourself a school supply, even if it’s just for the fun of it.  There’s power in a pen that writes really well or a fresh stack of sticky notes.  A cute pencil or mug might be just the ticket – even if it’s just for the Sunday crossword puzzles.  Buy a new novel that’s more serious than a beach read.  Grab a pretty notebook or some glue (well, maybe not the glue) and toast all of us returning to school in uncertain times. It’s time to celebrate a new season. I know I will, face shield and all.  Cheers!
